Obasanjo Prostrate before Ooni of Ife. See Photo

Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on his visite to Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife to pay homage, where he, in traditional Yoruba fashion, prostrated before Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, his host.

The international statesman, who stepped in with other prominent personalities, was received by prominent traditional rulers in Ile-Ife. Some of those present during the visitation were Dr. Femi Okunnu; Femi Majekodunmi; Chief Oyewole Faseye; Ayo Balogun and many other distinguished Yoruba personalities.

His action was applauded by some of those present during the visit, who were surprised that he could so humble himself before the foremost Yoruba king. Referring to the Ooni’s recent visit the Aalafin of Oyo and Awujale of Ijebuland among others, as a way of ensuring unity, Obasanjo expressed support for the move by Oba Ogunwusi to unite all Yoruba monarchs.

He insisted that the unity move by the Ooni was important for the progress of Yorubaland and urged the Ooni not to relent in his endeavour to ensure unity, adding that Ife remained the source of Yorubaland. According to the former President,

“I commend the role of Ooni in ensuring peace in Yorubaland. Continue what you are doing, especially your unity course. I am happy with the move taken so far. “It is only a sign of honour for the Ooni to visit anyone. That does not stop Ile-Ife from its position in the history of Yorubaland.”

Obasanjo subsequently prayed for the progress of Ife and Yorubaland and apologised for not being present at the Ooni’s coronation.

In his remark, the Ooni expressed appreciation for the former president’s visit, describing his guest as a lover and promoter of the Yoruba culture.
